Affordable Turks and Caicos – We've Found A Hidden Gem

Grace Bay BeachAs Turks and Caicos continues to welcome an amazing array of new upscale hotels and restaurants that attract a loyal following of celebrities and a-list vacationers, it has also become a financially challenging destination for many. It seems like yesterday when mentioning Turks and Caicos would draw quizzical looks from vacationers – where???  But word soon spread about the 12 mile stretch of pristine beach along Grace Bay and the short less than 3 hour flying time from northeast airports.  Before long world class condo-hotel developments sprang up all along famed Grace Bay beach and the number of visitors grew proportionately.  As new resorts opened, prices inevitably climbed.

The Island ClubThat’s why I’m so excited to let you know about a wonderful (and affordable) vacation property that’s just 900 feet from Grace Bay beach.  Many of you know that Turks and Caicos has been our favorite island destination for many years and we were thrilled to learn about The Island Club

6 Weeks In The Dominican Republic – A Trip Report

Bavaro Beach Punta CanaWe’ve just left the Dominican Republic after renting a condo in Punta Cana for 6 weeks to escape the miserable New England winter weather, and we’re happy to report is was a great success.  Here’s what you need to know about vacationing in the DR.

Overall Impressions of the DR:

  • As I walked along a sidewalk in St. Kitts today, it struck me that I truly miss the lyrical call of every person passing by offering a cheery, “Hola!” – almost like a song, and always accompanied by a smile.  The Dominican people are a pleasure to know – easy going, likely to be singing, quick with a smile, handshake and hug.  We enjoyed meeting ‘the locals’ and conversed with them as best we could.
Skipping Hut to Hut in the White Mountains National Forest

Lonesome Lake HutDon’t I wish! Clint and I just returned from an adventurous 3 day hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, superbly guided by folks at the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). If you’ve ever thought of going on a scenic hike in the mountains, read on…. this is a tale of ‘girl challenges mountain and the mountain nearly won’!

Lonesome LakeWhat was I thinking?!! A perky jaunt over well trodden trails to peaks revealing breathtaking vistas….. just the thing to challenge our aging frames? My aim was to get us out of our “comfort zone”, meet some like minded people, and enjoy the summer mountain air. Let me say, Heidi I’m not – I totally misjudged my capacity for up hill hiking. Our comfort zone was stretched beyond all recognition and my short little legs quivered like licorice sticks by the time we arrived at our hut on the second day. Clint’s previously broken leg actually stood up really well – I was wishing I had some of that titanium riveted in mine on a few occasions (not really).
