The name Saskatchewan means “the river that flows swiftly.” Centuries ago, native tribes lived on these plains and used them for hunting buffalo; it was at this time that the name was formed. Eventually, the arable land was sold to farmers who practiced agriculture on the fields which continues today.

Prince Albert National Park is one of the most famous parks in Canada. The park’s impeccable beauty and landscape have earned it the name of “50 Places of a Lifetime” by National Geographic. The park extends over a magnitude of 3,975 square kilometers, which makes it impossible to tour the entire park in a single day. Other than scenic tours, there are several other ventures such as skiing, boat rides, or you can simply ride your bike. The park has a total of six beaches and several lakes where you can take your canoe or even make a reservation in one of the famous cabins!

Fort Walsh National Historic Site

The Fort Walsh National historic site was established in 1875 on the orders of James Walsh. The purpose of the fort was to put an end to the illegal trade of whiskey that had become common during that time. It is known that not only whiskey traders but also Sioux warriors, who had taken refuge in Canada, came to trade at the fort. Once the Sioux warriors returned to their homeland, the fort was isolated. It wasn’t until 1942 that the fort was reclaimed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who decided to acquire the land and use it as a breeding ground for his horses. When the RCMP moved, the fort was eventually turned into a historic site. Other than the historical significance, the site is a popular hiking and bike riding!

RCMP Heritage Centre

The RCMP Heritage Center is one of the most popular heritage sites in Canada. The Heritage Center has a collection of equipment, photography, and weapons that are in display for the visitors. The heritage center also holds the Sergeant Major’s Parade, which results in large crowds visiting the site. Other than the Sergeant Major’s Parade, the Sunset Retreat is also held at the site, which is a display of British Military Traditions dated back to the 18th-19th century. If you are more interested in learning about the history of the area, you can even join a guided tour of the city!

Little Manitou Lake

Fort Carlton

The historical monument was originally constructed in 1795 by the Hudson’s Bay Company and is built across North Saskatchewan. The initial purpose of the port was to allow rive patrolling and help fur trader acquire provisions. These activities were carried out in the fort till around 1885. However, the fort was rebuilt by the government and was restored as a historical monument. The fort today is a feast for the eyes. The visitors can go on extravagant canoe trips, take a tour of the historic fort, or simply wander on the vast grounds.

Qu’Appelle Valley
