7 Do’s and Don’ts For Planning A Successful Ski Holiday

Considering a ski holiday with your family for the first time this year or next, but not sure where to start?  A typical beach holiday can be organized super-fast  ̶  find a great deal, arrange your travel insurance, throw your shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, and shades in your case and you’re good to go.

Ski Holiday

With ski trips, however, there are a few more pieces to the puzzle and a lot more gear – but fear not, because your first-time nerves will disappear after reading these seven do’s and don’ts for planning a successful ski holiday.

Do consider everyone’s needs

If you’re an accomplished skier, a high-altitude resort with plenty of off-piste action is perfect, but if your kids or partner are at novice or intermediate level, you’ve got to consider them too. In this scenario, pick a mixed-ability resort like Les Arcs in France with a variety of pistes and high-speed lifts.

Don’t presume expensive is best

Some resorts are packed with Michelin-starred restaurants and 5-star hotels, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll feel comfortable there, or that they will have the best runs for your needs  ̶  you might find a better deal in a resort with a more rounded offering.

Do choose your ski resort carefully

Your ideal ski resort will have several different components  ̶  you might want it to be within easy reach of your home base, to have apartment-led accommodation options and to offer plenty of off-slope entertainment for families, for example. Choose carefully so you can tick every box.

Don’t ignore the snowboarders in your group

Some resorts are set up superbly for skiers but have a lack of facilities for snowboarders.  Others, however, have ample terrain for both.  If you don’t want to disappoint the riders in your group, check your resort has access to nearby snowparks with a selection of pipes, rails and kickers.

Do consider a customized ski holiday

If all these considerations still feel a little overwhelming, please don’t worry  ̶  you can arrange a customised snowsports adventure with ski holiday experts like Erna Low. This way, your accommodation, passes and lessons can be rolled into one convenient package prepared by those in the know.

Don’t forget to check historical snowfall

Working out how ‘snow-sure’ your resort really is doesn’t just depend on its base altitude  ̶  its geographical position amidst the mountains and proximity to glaciers are also crucial contributory factors. You should check the historical snowfall records over the past few seasons to ascertain the best time to visit  ̶  find them online!

Don’t forget about the après-ski

You’ll soon get bored if your only entertainment after a day on the slopes is gathering by the fireside sipping hot chocolate. Whether you prioritize fine dining, lively pubs or exciting nightclubs, be sure to confirm that the après-ski in your resort of choice satisfies everyone in your travel party.
