If you want to visit a city that’s not far away from Dallas but offers new sights and activities, then try Dallas’s little brother Irving.  Irving is close to DFW International Airport, making it an easy first stop when you arrive in the area. It’s also nearby Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex if you’re seeking entertainment.  Beyond being close to several indoor attractions, it also has many outdoor activities.  Are you visiting the area sometime soon? Well, make sure to check out these seven outdoor activities around Irving, Texas.

1. Founder’s Plaza Observation Area

If you love watching planes take off and land, head to Founder’s Plaza Observation Area.  There, you’ll be able to sit back and relax as you watch airplanes come in and out of DFW Airport. Enjoy nature and a nice picnic lunch while watching the planes soar off into the horizon.  And don’t forget to use one of the site’s telescopes to view the sky. There’s nothing better than getting a close-up view of a 747 flying across the Texas skyline!

2. Mandalay Canal

To escape the city, take a stroll down the Mandalay Canal.  If it reminds you of the canals in Venice, don’t be surprised — Venice was the initial inspiration for Mandalay.  The surrounding architecture is beautiful. From the office buildings to the shops and restaurants, everything has a perfect old-world charm.  Feel peace as you enjoy stunning views of waterfalls and vine-covered bridges. The path lined with trees helps you experience nature to the fullest.  Keep your eyes peeled for waterfowls, and pack a lunch so you can soak in the sights.

Bring your dog along, too, because the walkway is pet-friendly. Fido is going to LOVE strolling along the canal!

3. Gondola Rides

When you think of gondola boats, Texas probably isn’t the first place that jumps to mind.  But, it turns out that you can catch one through Mandalay Bay. You can go for a gondola ride on Lake Carolyn, too!

If you’ve never ridden in one, you’re in for a treat. It’s a fun thing to do with family and friends.  And there’s even an electric gondola you can try if that’s more your style!  Add to your adventure by hiring a tour guide. They can take you to waterfalls and hidden water passages. Who knew you could catch an Italian-style gondola ride in North Texas?  It’s truly a blast!

4. The Fritz Park Petting Farm

If you’re an animal lover, check out the Fritz Park Petting Farm. There, you’ll meet cows, sheep, chickens, horses, and a range of other farm animals.  You’ll even have the chance to pet and feed them!  The Petting Farm is perfect for families. Your kids will love spending time with all of the critters. And the Farm even offers guided educational tours, so your kiddos might learn a thing or two.  If you live in the area, this is a fun thing to do with the family on the weekend.

It’s nice to escape from the city every once in a while and enjoy a peaceful farm environment. A trip to Fritz Park allows you to relax and reconnect with nature and the creatures who live in it.

5. Victoria Park

Victoria Park has all sorts of things to do. You can walk along the lake, or relax in one of the many pavilions.  If you’re the athletic type, the park has a volleyball court where you can get a game going with friends.

Here are a few more activities the park offers:

  • Lake or stream
  • Tennis court

Stand up paddleboarding is so much fun, and you can do it at Lake Carolyn and the Mandalay Canal. Rent a few stand up paddleboards and enjoy the sights while getting a workout.  If it’s your first time on a board, you can get training and support.  Get away from it all and try a fun new activity. It’s the perfect way to be active while enjoying the great outdoors.

7. Dallas Zoo

While you’re in the area, do yourself a favor and venture to Dallas. It’s only 10 minutes away from Irving, and it’s home to the Dallas Zoo.  This 106-acre zoo is one of the largest and oldest parks in all of Texas. And it houses over 2,000 animals. That’s a lot of animals to learn about, so take your time and enjoy it!  Zoos are fun for the whole family, and the Dallas Zoo is a special one. Walking around and looking at the animals is a fantastic learning experience for both you and your kids!
