How To Make More Time For Travel

“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Time is a scarce commodity! Or, at least it is in our own minds. One cannot have enough of it and we treasure the moments we can step out of everyday routines to enjoy it. It is March already and seems like yesterday when we celebrated the New Year’s Eve. Time never stops – it seems to move faster than the year before.  Time is the primary aspect of why people do not travel more – money can be an issue as well, but even when you have the money, time may not be on your side.

When we talk about people who have 9 to 5 jobs, they often feel they don’t have sufficient time to truly get away. Therefore, they do not travel as often as they would like.  If you are employed at a company that requires you to be working throughout the week and believe you do not have the time to travel – you are WRONG!

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” – Jack Kerouac

Check out our great tips on how to make time for traveling more.

Travel Freedom

Prioritize your bucket list

Well, almost everyone has a bucket list, and if you do not already have one make sure to get down to writing one today.  Writing it down in the order of priorities gets you one step closer to being there.

We’ll want to do different things. Someone wants to travel around the world while others want to get engaged at the Eiffel Tower. All of these things are bucket listed for a reason – you have limited time to accomplish everything. Therefore, when you are short on time, prioritize your bucket list to see what locations seem to be more achievable considering time and money. This way, you can plan accordingly and take out time for traveling to places that do not require as much time.

Plan weekend getaways

Another way to go about things is by planning weekend getaways – yes, you can make it happen. This does not necessarily have to be flying out to another country. You can plan to spend a weekend away within driving distance, for instance.  Right now, you might be thinking that two days is not a lot of time. Do not let that fool you. Two days are enough for couple vacations where you can explore a new town or city, or spend time to relax in a luxurious resort. Of course, you cannot fly to a different continent for a two day holiday.

Weekend getaways allow you to be at the workplace throughout the week and you can unwind over the weekend.  Get organized for a getaway right after work on Friday and return late Sunday afternoon to maximize your time.

Travel nearby

Music Festival

No matter if you only have a few days or a week to travel, consider nearby locations as your getaway plan. Traveling does not mean you have to go halfway around the world. This is not an ideal solution when you do not have time on your side.  Consider visiting destinations within a 2 hour drive and see them in an out of the ordinary way.  If you usually stay in a budget lodging, splurge for two nights in an ultra luxury property.  Or perhaps spend it on the water, in an AirBnB, or at a nearby campground.  Check out the events calendars in surrounding areas and head for a nearby music or food festival.  Get out of your normal routine and experience familiar places in a new way.

Become a local tourist

If all else fails, opt to become a local tourist! Have you ever become a tourist in your own city? We all know people who have not explored their city in years.  If you are someone who does not visit the museums or major attractions of your own city often, you do not need 10 days to do it, a short visit will do.  Simply, take the weekend off and become a local tourist. You will not only have a good time seeing places you never saw before, but learn more about the history of where you come from.  For even more fun, invite another couple or family along on your nearby adventure.  Everyone will enjoy the company and congratulate you on a great idea.

In summary, time will never be on your side until you want it to be! There are a whole lot of ways to make more time for travel than you actually think. Plan wisely and give yourself the time you really deserve!
