The White Mountains of New Hampshire are one of the most beautiful and easily accessible vacation regions in the world. Known for spectacular mountains, scenic rivers, festive ski resorts and picturesque Mt. Washington Valley, the White Mountains are ideal for a country inn getaway any time of the year.
We were recently invited to participate in the 17th Annual Inn to Inn Holiday Cookie Tour hosted by 12 lovely White Mountain Country Inns. Each Inn produces over 1000 treats from original cookie or candy recipes and displays their beautiful holiday decorations. Innkeepers open their rooms for viewing and encourage visitors to enjoy their Inns.
The tour began at the beautiful Snowvillage Inn in Eaton Center, New Hampshire. The Snowvillage Inn has new ownership and renovations have restored the original splendor of this iconic Inn. The Inn is lovely and has breathtaking views of the Presidential Mountain Range. The cookie selection was one of the best we tasted.
The White Mountain area is blessed with exceptional inns and lots to keep your entertained. The participating Inns this year were:
Darby Field Inn in Albany
Riverbend Inn in Chocorua
Inn at Crystal Lake and Pub in Eaton
Covered Bridge House in Glen
Notchland Inn in Hart’s Location,
Glen Oaks Inn in Intervale
Inn at Ellis River in Jackson
1785 Inn & Restaurant in North Conway
Eastman Inn, North Conway
Old Red Inn & Cottages in North Conway
Snowvillage Inn in Snowville
Admiral Peary Inn Bed & Breakfast in nearby Fryeburg, Maine.
Each Inn offers something unique, whether it is the accommodations, the views, or the food.
The Inn at Ellis River has it all. Walking through 100 years ofrich history brings you into the spacious dining room, or perhaps you’d like to settle into the warm and cozy bar for a nightcap. The rooms are spacious and offer various combinations of amenities including gas fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. We were able to peak into a first floor room, which was specular with a delightful patio adjacent to it.
If you are looking for seclusion and the most breathtaking views of the White Mountains, The Notchland Inn is the place for you. Located on a knoll at the base of Mount Bemis, the inn looks out upon Mount Hope and Mount Crawford. The large and spacious inn offers deluxe rooms, spacious suites and cottages. The Inn is welcoming and comfortable with game rooms, sitting areas and a large dining room. Known for their excellent cuisine, the Notchland offers a one dinner seating with a different menu each day.
Snowy weather threatened to interfere with the Cookie Tour, but in my opinion it just added to the lovely weekend.
After the tour, we settled into The Inn at Crystal Lake, our hosts. We dinned in the intimate dining room where both the service and the food were excellent. After dinner, we sat by the wood burning stove while the snow fell around us. Tucked-in for the night, we slept soundly in a comfortable King-size bed. Upon rising the next morning we were treated to a wonderful full breakfast and watched the snow continue to fall. Cozy, warm and inviting was the Inn at Crystal Lake.
We thoroughly enjoyed the 17th Annual Holiday Cookie Tour, which not only provided some wonderful cookies and recipes, but it was also a treat to tour the White Mountains Country Inns.
We’ve already put their Spring Food, Herb and Beer tour on our calendar!
Come along for the weekend of June 7-8, 2014, as the inns celebrate the bounty of the valley. We’ll tour country inns, see cooking demonstrations, sample locally made delicacies, sip some regionally brewed beers, and take home some prized recipes.
Whether it’s a getaway for Valentine’s day, school break, or a weekend for snow shoeing and country sleigh rides, the White Mountains are just a few hours drive north of Boston, but you’ll feel like you’re in another world. Contact the inns directly or through the White Mountains Country Inns association.
