There’s a new focus on Foodie based shore excursions and chef prepared regional dishes aboard major cruise lines in 2014. While cruising has always had a reputation for offering an abundance of food, cruise lines haven’t often tapped into local ingredients or presented regional dishes of the ports they visit. For many of us, half the pleasure of traveling to new destinations is to experience the local fare and to bring home a recipe for a wonderful regional dish. Thankfully, this is all changing with cruise lines featuring celebrity chef experiences, cooking classes and on-shore culinary excursions.
Here’s a look at upcoming cruises that delight all the foodies among us:
Azamara Club Cruises breaks away from the ordinary with “AzAmazing Evenings” which are exclusive, private regional events. Guests go ashore for a taste of the local culture, arts, music, regional cuisine and drinks.
Carnival Cruise Lines offers a Mexican Cuisine Cooking and Tasting Experience at the Playa Mia Grand Beach Park. Participants will sip margaritas while a master chef explains about the essentials of Mexican cooking and using traditional ingredients such as blue agave, banana leaves, habanero chillies and other seasonal ingredients.
Costa Cruises offers cooking class ezcursions in Thailand and Indonesia. In Barcelona Spain they offer an excursion with sightseeing plus a gormet didning experience with Chef Carles Gaig, a Michelin Star recipient.
Crystal Cruises offers a cooking class experience in Casablanca, Morocco, where guests are apt to prepare a traditional lamb dish prepared with plums and honey, while shipping orange juice in orange flower water.
Oceana Cruises offer Culinary Discover Tours. While visiting the Amalfi Coast in Italy, participants enjoy a special Ravello Lunch, sightseeing and handmade Chocolates Demonstration.

Seaborn Cruise Line offers Shopping With The Chef outings. The Chef picks out fresh ingredients while guests enjoy wine and cheese samples from local vendors. When back onboard, guests enjoy a specially prepared meal with their market items.
Windstar Cruises introduces The Origins of Paella to participants of their Splendors of Southern Spain excursion in Valencia, Spain. The excursion includes a market visit, paella preparation lesson and tastings. in Montenegro, a Windstar Chef will guide guests through a local market, discuss local culinary specialties and regional cooking techniques.
