I have lived 10 minutes from the Belmont Stakes for 13 years and have never gone there. I would never have thought to take my family there because it’s a racetrack, and I had no idea that they would have attractions geared towards families and children. I was checking one of my usual go-to sites for things to do, MommyPoppins.com and they had Belmont Stakes listed as one of the things to do on the weekends. We decided to take our toddler for the day and we all had a surprisingly great time. Here’s what you can look forward to:
Sunday is Family Fun Day At The Park
Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York has been welcoming New Yorkers for professional horse racing for more than 50 years. What many folks don’t realize is that every Sunday in the summer they have family fun days at the park. They also have Breakfast at Belmont from 7:30am -9:00am on Sundays where families can take a free tram ride through the stables. It’s $2 to park and $3 per person to get in, and kids are admitted free of charge. Families will be happy to know that picnicking is encouraged. There are lots of picnic tables and places to sit all throughout the park area; they allow most anything to be brought in except glass bottles. You can buy food there as well; although it’s a little pricey. But it’s good to know you can get an order of fries or pizza if you’re craving them.
Belmont Stakes has a great “Backyard” area with a terrific playground and duck pond to entertain kids. During summer months they plan different themed activities each week. The first week we went, there was a local petting zoo where children could feed the animals and they had bouncing houses and live music. The second week was circus themed where they had face painters and many of the attractions were different from the week before. The horses were also out for everyone to see before they were off to the races.
My son could not wait to see the horses’ race. That is all he could talk about. We were able to go right up front and watch the races. He was so excited. The whole experience was amazing for him. He got an ice cream and waited for the next race. The races were pretty close together so kids are easily entertained from one race to the next. The property is really nice with lots of grass, trees and flower diplays. It is very well kept, clean and a very child-friendly environment.
I really recommend Belmont Stakes for an unusual summer or fall family outing. Belmont Stakes is now on my list of budget friendly places to visit in New York and it’s a wonderful place to bring a picnic and enjoy the sunshine. They have a full schedule of activities for Fall so check out their website and plan a fun day at the park.
