5 Most Dangerous and 5 Safest Places to Travel in the US

Family At The BeachAs I get older, I tend to err more on the side of caution than when I was in my early 20s. Now, I have young children to think about when I plan a trip to somewhere in the United States.  Having two daughters under the age of 10 has changed my way of thinking. This caution isn’t merely for their safety from physical harm, but I can’t leave them without a father if something were to happen to me. It’s a whole different world when you have children that need you.

Now, I plan areas to visit by looking closely at the community.  According to NeighborhoodSout.com here are some of the most dangerous and the safest places to vacation in the United States.

1. Sarasota, Florida – Although Sarasota, Florida is a wondrous and beautiful place to live, it is also one of the least safest cities in the United States according to Neighborhood Scout.com. It’s one of those locations that are beautiful to visit, but you should be aware of the boundaries of the tourist areas and always stay and play within them.

2. Richmond, California – This larger city has quite a diverse culture. However, the chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime are nearly three times higher than the national average. There are safer ocean-side locations that would be better suited for my family than visiting Richmond. Why leave anything to chance if it’s avoidable?

3. Miami Beach, Florida – For those who are fans of CSI: Miami, televised crime may not be that far fetched in the Miami Beach area. There is a 1 in 100 chance of being involved in a violent crime and a 1 in 9 chance of becoming a victim of property-related crime. It may be a beautiful vacation hotspot, but is it worth an extended stay?

4. Milwaukee, Wisconsin – There are a lot of wonders located in Milwaukee. The Miller Brewery, the Harley Davidson Museum, and the Summerfest are all good reasons to visit this crime-driven city. With nearly 10 times the crime per square mile as the national median, you should watch yourself carefully.

5. Danville, Illinois – Although you have less chance of having your car stolen in Danville, burglary and theft rates are a great deal higher than the national average. Assault crimes are considerably higher as well, making this location not very realistic to visit with children.

The whole country isn’t about hardship or danger. There are many great places to visit that can ease your burden if you are traveling with children. Some of these areas are beautiful beyond description and can make anyone want to move into these communities.

1. Mason, Ohio – For a relaxed country look and feel, Mason, Ohio is one of the safest places to visit in the United States, according to Neighborhood Scout. It is a prime example of what a community mindset of 30,000+ people can accomplish when they work together.

2. Hoffman Estates, Illinois – While Illinois has a higher crime rate than the national median, Hoffman Estates is considerably lower. Located near Lake Michigan, this locale has that hometown feel and is the location of the Sears Centre Arena for family entertainment prospects.

3. Leawood, Kansas – Kansas as a whole is below the national average for crimes per square mile. The Park Place in Leawood reminds me of the outdoor 16th Street Mall located in Denver but for a smaller community. It is a very safe place to visit and get away from the hustle of big-city life.

4. Kaysville, Utah – As I consider the crime rates per city I’ve visited, there is one constant. Smaller cities seem to see less action than others. Kaysville is just a short distance from the Hill Airforce Base Museum and is surround by beautiful scenery. Just a short distance from Salt Lake City, there is a surprising number of things to do in this area of Utah.

5. Danville, California – Unlike its Illinois namesake, Danville, California is among the safest areas to visit. Its mountainous and green landscapes make it a great location for those looking to explore nature without being harassed by crimes of various kinds. The most enticing places I would like to visit are the restaurants located on the riverbank.

There is a great deal of beauty in this country and you shouldn’t have to fear traveling. As long as you keep your wits about you when driving through locales, you could prevent any harm to yourself and loved ones. Stay in open and public areas to prevent being a target. As a resident of Michigan… I would be very surprised to find out that the entire city of Milwaukee has some how managed to float across Lake Michigan, from it’s typical location in WISCONSIN! Do your research…

Obviously my editing skills slipped on this one – thanks for pointing out that Milwaukee is now and has always been in Wisconsin!
