Looking for a new beach destination? Check out Kemah and Galveston Texas for Your Next Seaside Vacation
Having lived in Texas all my life I have much to say about our beaches, not all of it good. However in the last few years the two large hurricanes we have had have washed away many of the eyesores and brought new prosperity to the area. Now I am proud to recommend our beaches to visitors from all over! Two of the most popular waterfront attractions near the Houston area are Kemah and Galveston.
The Kemah Boardwalk is not so much beach as amusement park on the water; however it does offer a huge ocean side walkway and many great restaurants. Kids will love the variety of rides and games and can even pet and feed stingrays at the aquarium/restaurant. There is also a seasonally available speedboat ride through Galveston Bay and a classic wooden rollercoaster. You can stay in a waterfront room at the Boardwalk Inn and take a moonlight stroll, lit with a colorful fair-like atmosphere.
If you are looking for variety in your beach vacation, then Galveston is the place to go. From amusements to historical landmarks, to great dining and museums, Galveston offers it all as well as the sandy beaches you love. Take a walk along the sea wall or a stroll down the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, opened in May of 2012. After the storm damage, the pier has been reopened as a beautifully nostalgic amusement area, similar to Coney Island. Full of games and rides for the whole family, Pleasure Pier is a must see.
Moody Gardens, an amusement park/museum offers a variety of attractions for everyone including a rainforest and aquarium pyramid as well as an IMAX 3D theater.
In the mood for more water? Try Schlitterbahn Galveston Island, with Texas’ only heated indoor water park. Open year round, this park offers lots of water adventures with huge slides, relaxing rivers, and even water roller coasters.
If something a little calmer is in your books, try touring Galveston’s historic homes, watch a film about the Great Storm of 1900, or ride the free Galveston Island Ferry.
There are so many fun things to see and do along the Gulf Coast of Texas. From the beaches to the attractions to the great eating and first class hotels, you just can’t go wrong. Try seasonal activities like the Festival of Lights during Christmas or Mardi Gras, the party of the year.
