Cat Island Bahamas – The Paradise You’ve Been Dreaming Of!

Don’t wait another minute to discover Cat Island in the Out Islands of the Bahamas – you’ll find miles and miles of gorgeous (undeveloped) beachfront and delightful laid-back intimate resorts.  I’m just back from a fabulous vacation at the Fernandez Bay Village on Cat Island and can’t wait to go back again.
If you’re looking for a beautiful, secluded resort to reconnect, rekindle, and recharge – this resort delivers with outstanding beauty and charming accommodations.
As I sit in cold, rainy Florida, I yearn to be back at FBV where the temps are in the mid 80’s!  I should have stayed longer!!!!  Getting there is easy enough – fly nonstop from east coast airports to Nassau, then connect with Cat Island Air or Sky Bahamas.  Or take a direct flight on Continental Airlines from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami.  (PS – there are no cats on Cat Island – it was named for a privateer by the name of Arthur Catt).

Fernandez Bay Village is the premier resort on Cat Island, and a wonderful choice for anyone seeking a peaceful, friendly, romantic beachfront retreat.   Arriving at FBV is like being welcomed by long lost cousins who own a fabulous beach side estate.  There are 17 rustic stone and wood villas that have the feel of chic beach cottages with comfy rattan furnishings, outdoor garden showers, and decks for gazing right out to the turquoise sea. (sigh)

When you feel like a bit of company, wander over to the thatch roofed club house where meals are served, activities are planned, and conversations develop around the gazebo ‘honor’ bar.  The resort is perched at the center of a perfect one mile long half moon bay, making it ideal for leisurely beach strolls.  Kayaking is a must as an adjacent estuary leads into miles and miles of mangrove trails, even more secluded beaches and a dramatic ‘blue hole’.  Donna, Evan or Kalie at the front desk are always available to help plan excursions (if you can bear to leave the resort).   Climb up to The Hermitage, take a drive up to Arthur’s Town, venture out to Greenwood, or go foraging for treasures on  sea glass beach.

The dining at FBV was outstanding.  Delicious buffet meals are served in the club house with dining often on the front stone portico where the sun sets dramatically over the bay and just a few steps separate you from the white sand and rolling waves.

We gobbled up Bahamian lobsters, beef tenderloin, and a wonderfully prepared almond encrusted grouper.  Each evening brought a differently themed menu – all wonderfully prepared.  Then after sampling a yummy homemade desert, everyone wanders down to the beach to gather around the nightly bonfire – perfection.  If you should want to try a local restaurant for an evening, the staff is happy to make a reservation for you, drop you off and pick you up again when you’re done.

The biggest asset at Fernandez Bay Village for me were the exceptionally friendly folks who run it.  There are smiles on every face (and why not they live in paradise), and they seem to delight in making your stay completely stress-free.  Families will feel just as at home here as couples, and you won’t find any electronics to disrupt your communication with nature – no TVs, VCRs, Radios or CLOCKS!  There is free wifi if you bring along your own laptop.

As you’ve guessed by now, Clint and I had a memorable time on Cat Island and are already dreaming of returning again.  When I think of all the places we’ve flown to all over the world to find a slice of paradise, it’s amazing to realize this gorgeous Eden is just a short 1 hour flight off the Florida coast!
