We had a blissfully calm sail from Dominica to Ile des Saintes, a collection of 8 small islands off the coast of Guadeloupe. All hands were on deck to watch [...]
Anchored off Charlestown early on Sunday morning, we were thrilled to see Nevis' peak was in full view and not wreathed in clouds as is so often the case. Phillip, our cruise director, cautioned that Nevis is a sleepy little community on an average day, and Sundays are even quieter.
Last winter Clint and I were gazing out to sea at sunset from a funky beach bar on St. Kitts. Off in the distance was the most beautiful sailing ship gliding majestically through the bay with soft sunlight reflecting off its billowing sails. Right then and there I knew I had to get on that ship! A bit of detective work determined that the gorgeous 4 masted schooner was one of Star Clipper's sailing ships and you guessed it... this winter we went sailing with Star Clipper on a journey through the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. Join me on this memorable journey:
The ever changing shades of aquamarine are stunning as we skip over the waves. Before long Captain Pat swings us around as he spots huge sting rays sweeping across the flats. Next stop - an amazing coral grotto big enough for us to enter boat and all. Our morning is spent zipping between one beautiful island to another, ogling at movie star's private cays and trying to out-race the occasional squall.

Our enthusiastic group of two dozen Travel Bloggers joined hands and slipped and dipped our way upward. We were fortunate to have arrived late in the afternoon and had the climb all to ourselves. Before long we were squealing and laughing as currents twirled us around and dunked us into free form pools.
When did the urge to go to sail on a Tall Ship first tickle your imagination? Was it while watching Errol Flynn swashbuckle his way through tropical ports, reading Jim Hawkins' adventures on Treasure Island, humming Crosby, Still & Nash's Wooden Ships, or perhaps watching Captain Jack Sparrow command the Black Pearl? For old and young, the romance of a wooden schooner setting a course for adventure is compelling and should not be put off a moment longer.
Picture a location with miles of handsomely tended vineyards, fabulous artisan farm to table restaurants, a beautiful waterfront setting, charming historic village, delightful luxury inns, grand estate wineries, active arts community and world renown theater performances. You might be imagining that I flew off to Napa or Sonoma, Bordeaux, or perhaps Argentina, but my fabulous getaway was a very short flight away.... to Ontario Canada.... just a bit west of Toronto on the north side of Niagara Falls, and a short drive from Buffalo New York. Who knew that Ontario boasts one of the finest wine growing regions in the world?!!
Dramatic lighthouse accommodations dot the coastline along the east and west of the United States and along the shore of the Great Lakes. Imagine wandering along a craggy coast this [...]
