For Mountain Bike Junkies: Best Places for Year-Round Trails
If you’re a mountain biker, chances are you’re insatiable. You love the feeling of conquering a challenging trail, no matter how high up. But even you aren’t masochistic enough to try mountain biking in the freezing cold and risk running over an icy spot. Luckily, there are a number of different areas you can bike in year-round.
Los Angeles, California
The San Gabriel Mountains that surround LA make for excellent mountain biking destinations. Because it’s always hot and dry here, you can ride twelve months out of the year, tackling the impressive 5,000-feet vertical runs and ending your day in the city for a bite to eat.
Colorado Springs, Colorado
If the name “Garden of the Gods” doesn’t get you excited, nothing will. Colorado Springs is home to some of the greatest mountain biking in the United States. With beautiful scenery off-setting more than 20+ miles of trail, you’ll find everything from easy rides, to narrow, rocky courses that challenge even the most experienced rider. The trails are accessible from town without ever using a vehicle.
Central Savannah River Area, Georgia
This riding area is right on the Georgia/South Carolina border, boasting more than 150 miles of single track and the FATS, the only IMBA Epic in South Carolina. This area is well-known enough that it was home to the 2012 USA Cycling Elite. Warm in the summer and mild in the winter, it’s possible to ride all throughout the year.
Big Sur, California
While this may be one of the most picturesque routes you’ll ever ride, Big Sur is home to a 6.5 mile climb to the top of the mountain at an average eight percent incline. It’s not for the faint of heart. The trail is long and challenging, but many swear by its entertainment value. The weather remains at a constant temperature all throughout the year, making it a great place to visit when the rest of the country is frozen.
Black Canyon Trail, Arizona
This may be one of the most challenging trails on this list. At 78 miles long, the Black Canyon Trail is an exhausting and demanding track. During the summer, the temperatures can climb to dangerous levels, so make sure you remain properly hydrated while riding. It’s an excellent locale during the cooler times of year as well.
