The pace of construction for lavish new resorts has slowed in the Caribbean in recent years, making the introduction of grand new properties all the more exciting. 2014 will see some striking new additions to the Caribbean scene. Sandals Resorts in particular will open new properties on a number of Caribbean islands including Barbados and Granada. Aruba has well earned it’s nickname of “One Happy Island by attracting vacationers with to its lively resorts and gorgeous beaches for decades. Aruba can be counted on for hot, hot, hot, sunny weather all winter long, even when more northerly islands have cooled down in January and February. Sandals coming to Barbados in a big way. Sandals Barbados opened its first resort on the island in St. Lawrence las month as a result of Sandals Resorts International purchasing Couples Resort in the former Almond Casuarina Beach Resort property. After bring the resort up to Sandals’ luxury romance standards, they are now accepting reservations for 2014. Sandals will adding an additional five restaurants and numerous upgrades to the property. And for even more excitement, Sandals will soon be breaking ground on a new Beaches Resort to be constructed in St. Peter at the former location of the Almond Beach Resort. The construction of the Beaches property is expected to be completed in early 2015.
British Virgin Islands
Sir Richard Branson’s exquisite private island resort in the British Virgin Islands finally has a Great House once again. Last month, Negril’s seven mile beach saw the opening of the Azul Sensatori Resort by Karisma Hotels. With 136 ocean view rooms, the resort has areas for both multi-generational family groups as well as adults-only areas. Karisma Hotels are known for their Gourmet Inclusive cuisine.
Hotel Riu Palace all-inclusive resort has just opened its doors in Northwest Jamaica near Montego Bay, making it the fifth Riu property in Jamaica and the first adults-only Riu resort on the island. Riu properties are known for high quality service, food and accommodation.
Another new Sandals Resort, Beaches Ocho Rios Resort and Golf Club has opened. Following a $30 million renovation of the former Beaches Boscobel,, the resort has been “Sandalized” to reflect Beaches reputation for fun and sophisticated family vacationing. The new resort has four villages, Caribbean, French, Greek and Italian, each with an international flair, themed restaurants and bars with regional cuisine and decor.
Watch for Hyatt to enter the All-Inclusive vacation market for the first time this year. Hyatt will be introducing three all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and Jamaica. Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall will be complete in late 2014 after renovations to the former Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall property. Hyatt Ziva is a new all-inclusive brand that is designed for family friendly vacationing.
The long anticipated rebirth of the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel will return this historic property to it’s storied opulence and elegance when it opens during the first quarter of 2014. Originally built by the Vanderbilt family in 1919 for an estimated one million dollars, this was the first luxury hotel in Puerto Rico and provided discerning guests with attentive yet discreet service. With its restoration, the tradition of privileged indulgence will continue. The hotel’s signature 1919 restaurant opened in October 2012 and is considered by many to be the best dining in Puerto Rico. Reconstruction of 323 guest rooms is expected to be completed soon.
