Children grown, family moved away and my husband asked “What do you want to do for Mother’s Day?” I had the perfect answer-Portsmouth NH.

Off we went to the Wentworth by the Sea, a beautiful historic hotel located in New Castle, NH.   This 161 room, AAA Four Diamond “grand hotel” on the New Hampshire seacoast, is one of just 4 remaining Grand Hotels in New Hampshire and the state’s only seaside grand resort. The hotel is everything you would expect from a historic property, and the views are breathtaking.  The perfectly manicured landscape makes a picturesque setting for any occasion.

Here’s an interesting fact about Portsmouth – the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Trees were a gift from Japan to say thank you to the United States for hosting the peace conference that ended the Russian-Japanese War in 1905.  The treaty was negotiated at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the delegates  stayed at The Wentworth Hotel.  A graft from the original 100 year old tree will be planted at the Wentworth this spring right near the magnificent Magnolia tree. The hotel is offering a special Cherry Blossom Package starting at $259 which is available through May 31, 2012.

Once we checked in to the hotel – it was off to the Stonewall Kitchen Company Store in nearby York, Maine for lunch and shopping.  Their café is wonderful with fresh salads and sandwiches, and be sure to try their lobster roll – it’s the best.  Of course you can make a meal out of sampling all their products inside.  The weather was magnificent and eating outside was perfect.

The city of Portsmouth was minutes from the hotel and some of the best restaurants are located in downtown.  We dined at Rudi’s Portsmouth, one of our favorite restaurants. Rudi's Portsmouth The food is always terrific and the elegant décor makes it a perfect place to spend a quiet evening. It doesn’t matter how many times we dine there, it is always the “best”.  For a more casual atmosphere try Jumpin Jay’s Fish Café . Don’t let the 60’s dinner décor fool you, the food is four stars and the service is always outstanding.  It’s like eating at your favorite neighborhood restaurant where everyone knows your name.  Try the Haddock Piccata, it is outstanding.

If it is good enough for the President, it’s good enough for us… so off to Kennebunkport ME for a beautiful drive along the seacoast.  A beautiful seacoast town complete with the smells of the ocean and taste of the best seafood.  Wonderful beaches and shops to make you feel as if you have stepped back in time.  You cannot help but relax and let the wind sail through your hair.

We hated to leave The Wentworth, but we will be back when they celebrate their 9th Annual Winter Wine Festival, a 6-week tour of the world’s best wines, most-illustrious winemakers and deliciously paired menus in February-March of 2013. . There is a reason Travel and Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler voted them one of the Best Hotels in the World.  Enjoy your visit to the NH seacoast and be sure to tell them Wicked sent you.
